The Last fifteen years have seen enormous business automation, which has led to the increasing dependency of business systems on information systems in particular and information technology (IT) in general. The most important ramification of this increasing dependency has been the emergence of Enterprise Architecture (EA) practice.

Enterprise Architecture, as a discipline is the art and science of capturing, articulating, defining and linking pieces of an enterprise together, so that the dependencies among the components of an enterprise can be understood, linkages can be established, strategies can be elaborated to achieve goals and meet objectives. Enterprise Architecture, from a definition point of view, is a collection of descriptive representations (from the view point of a stakeholder or stakeholder groups) of the components of an enterprise into a framework or a structure. The aim of the Enterprise Architecture is to enable the owners, planners and designers with the tools to understand the current state of a complex business (the AS IS model), reduce complexity, mitigate risk, assure quality and describe the future state of the business (the TO BE model) to bring seamless and effective change.
